A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these drugs must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
